If you are interested in visiting Australia as a tourist, you will likely need a “Visitor Visa” from the Australian government. This visa allows people to visit Australia as tourists, typically for visiting friends, family, or anything other than for business or medical purposes.

Interested applicants can apply for this visa through Australia’s Department of Home Affairs website by making an ImmiAccount and following the steps on their website. The Visitor Visa costs $145 Australian Dollars and can allow applicants to stay in Australia as a tourist for up to 12 months. After an applicant submits their application, it can take anywhere between two weeks and one year before a Visitor Visa is issued to the applicant.

FAST TRACK APPLICATION: The Australian government will prioritize any application for an additional $1000 AUD to ensure process completion within 48 hours. While this is much faster than the standard processing time, it still does not guarantee the approval of the visa since additional requirements may be requested, such as health examinations, criminal record checks, etc.

As of February 2022, unvaccinated travellers will not be able to enter Australia unless they are in an exempt category or hold an individual travel exemption to enter Australia.

Requirement for Visitor Visa in Australia as a Tourist

    (Subclass 600)

Financial Cost: Applicants must prove that they have enough money to enter, stay in, and exit Australia for the duration of the visa. Proof of this could include bank statements of three-month periods, tax records, credit card statements, etc.
Health Requirement  Applicants may be required to undergo a medical examination and meet the minimum health requirements.
Criminal History Applicants must be able to prove that they are of ‘good character’. Applicants are required to sign an Australian values statement and provide police certificates and other relevant documents.
Be a Genuine Tourist Applicants must provide proof that they intend to stay only temporarily in Australia and follow any conditions of their visa. Such proof can be a letter from a friend or family member in Australia inviting you to stay temporarily. Alternatively, such proof could be reasons to return home, specific temporary plans in Australia, etc.
Underage Issues If the applicant is under 18 years old, then the applicant must submit additional information, such as birth certificate, and information regarding their guardians. Such applicants may not be granted the Visitor Visa if it doesn’t seem like it is in the best interest of the youth.

Procedure To Obtain Visitor Visa in Australia:

    1. Preparation: Before applying, applicants must have all the necessary documentation and have complied with the applicable requirements as listed in this article. Applicants should have all their documents, ID, family documents, and health records for submission and English translations of all the necessary documents (if needed).
    2. Application for Visitor Visa: Once you have gathered and translated your documents, you can apply online with an ImmiAccount. The online process requires attaching the required documents and, if applicable, submitting family applications together and then simply paying the application fee. The application will not be processed until the application fee is paid. The cost for the application is $145 AUD.
    3. After the Application: Before the Visitor Visa can be issued, the Department of Home Affairs will inform the applicant if there is any additional information needed, such as corrections of mistakes, additional health examination, biometric information, etc.
    4. Receiving the Visa: If a visa is granted, then the applicant will receive a visa grant number, the date the visa expires and the visa conditions. These conditions will relate to the applicant’s obligations to stay in Australia for the duration of the visa. Once received, the visa will be digitally linked to the applicant’s passport.
